Helping Liana doula with the birth of her new website

I was on holiday in Portugal in June 2017, when I did what I said I wouldn’t do: I had a sneaky look at my emails.

I spotted an interesting message from a lady called Liana van Zyl. Liana was looking for a copywriter and asked if I would write copy for her new website. She is a birth doula and was setting up her own business offering her services in Nottingham and the surrounding areas.

Three thoughts immediately sprang to mind.

  • What on Earth is a ‘birth doula’?

  • If it is something to do with childbirth, how could I possibly write a whole website about this?

  • Would I be able to resist the temptation to slip ‘birthing solutions’ in there somewhere?

I had to think about it.

Shortly after, I replied and thanked Liana for her email, saying that I would love to help her with website copywriting when I got back to the UK.

When I did, we exchanged a few emails, Liana sent over masses of information and I did my own online research. I then wrote the site, Liana made a few additions and it was finished. From my early worries about taking on the project, it turned out to be one of the easiest and most rewarding websites I’ve ever written.

I have two grown-up daughters and was present at each birth, but as a man, I think it’s difficult to grasp the power and emotional magnitude of this event for a woman. A birth doula understands this and is basically there to support the expectant mum and her partner throughout the pregnancy and during the tumultuous first few weeks afterwards.

But Liana puts it much better than me…

As a birth doula, Liana offers a variety of services depending on whether it’s mum’s first baby, and how much help and support she feels she needs. Liana can be a birth partner and postnatal doula, and also runs hypnobirthing classes, carries out Closing the Bones postnatal massage and can provide placenta remedies.

The Closing the Bones postnatal massage and the placenta remedies were two of those fascinating topics that I would never have known about if I hadn’t worked on the copy for this site.

Closing the Bones postnatal massage

This is a great way for a new mum to feel her way into motherhood. In many cultures around the world, there is a period when the new mother is looked after and nourished and helped to heal – Closing the Bones is a key part of that.

These practices are global and multicultural, yet in Europe we seem to have lost them. So today if we want to reclaim these traditions, we have to re-learn these techniques from more traditional cultures around the world. Closing the Bones postnatal massage is such a technique, based on a proven medical diagnosis.

If an MRI scan was carried out on a pregnant woman it would show that during pregnancy her hips would open and become wider and wider. After the birth, it is important that they are helped to close back to their normal width, otherwise mothers would suffer from pelvic instability.

Placenta remedies

These are homeopathic treatments which are also based on ancient wisdom and folklore. Research and experience suggests that placenta remedies may help mothers with depression, baby blues and during times of emotional instability or separation.

The newborn baby may also benefit from placenta remedies as they can treat colic, fussiness, crying, teething, and during times of growth and separation anxiety e.g. crawling, walking and weaning.

Liana can prepare placenta remedies for both mum and her baby using a small piece of the placenta.
